Allergy-like symptoms
Just because you have symptoms that are
typically associated with allergy (sniffling, sneezing, watery
eyes), don't assume you're allergic. As many as one-third of
the people who believe they are allergic, actually are not. Symptoms
such as stomach cramps and vomiting may be the result of a food
allergy or they may indicate just one bad oyster. On the other
hand, a child with persistent ear infections may go through a
long course of antibiotics and even have ear tubes inserted before
an allergy or "sensitivity" to milk is
discovered. (See Allergies and Children for
more information.)
Many conditions share symptoms with allergy.
Only an allergy test and examination by a physician can rule
in or rule out allergy as an underlying cause. See testing options for
more information on how you can find out for sure. |
